I Found Love in a Hopeless Place

Tuesday: MAY I tell you something about myself?

I was 10 years old when I fell in love for the very first time.

His name was Office Tom Hanson and he was an undercover cop on a TV show called 21 Jumpstreet.

At the time, I don’t remember if I knew that his real name was Johnny Depp. I just knew that Officer Tom Hanson was a good cop with beautiful cheekbones, he often sported a headband, and he looked like this.

Um…swoon.

I think I slept with my copy of Sassy magazine with him on the cover for months.

Not too long after my love began, Officer Tom Hanson left Jumpstreet and was replaced by some greasy haired poser named Richard Grieco. That is of course when I stopped watching the show altogether.

Later on though, when Officer Tom Hanson became Johnny Depp and turned all independent quirky actor he went on to star in one of my favorite movies, Edward Scissorhands. Since Officer Tom Hanson looked nothing like a dude in a leather jumpsuit sporting scissors for hands, I focused less on my crush and more on the magicalness of the film.

Johnny still remains one of my first true original loves, even though sometimes he looks like this.

Or this.

Or even this.

It’s nice when he remembers that he’s beautiful and will suddenly show up in a film looking like this.

And this.

Good times.

Another one of my favorite Johnny Depp movies is What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?.  Funnily enough, I would end up later falling in love with someone else in that movie, though at the time he played a developmentally disabled teen and I only knew him as the cute kid from Growing Pains.

I think Johnny somehow became number two in my affections somewhere around here.

Why yes that is Leo in a fish tank.

Should I even mention how many times I’ve watched The Great Gatsby trailer?

The moral of this story? I was fangirling before it was a thing.

Oh and you never forget your first love.

  2. Leo was my first love in Growing Pains. I was about 13 or so. I can't get enough of him now and am THRILLED about his role in Gatsby. (Favorite high school book)

    1. Confession: I still haven't read the book! I will this summer though. I've seen the Robert Redford movie a million times though and I love it!

  3. Hahahah! I love this post, brilliant ... celebrity crushes are fantastic. I remember when every girl in my school fantasised about Leonardo DiCaprio - around the time he did Romeo and Juliet and (who can forget) Titanic ...

My first major love? Pacey Witter from Dawson's Creek - the class clown with the heart of gold, misunderstood, an outcast ... I think this is where my unhealthy relationship with troubled men developed and my need to 'fix them' ... sigh ... those were good times!

    Great post!

    1. Pacey was the ultimate fixer upper! I think that's why he gets Joey in the end, she invested so much of herself in getting him together! hahaha

  4. I had that image of Leo as a poster on my wall in college. Ahhhh, memories. I am also excited about the Great Gatsby movie, though my interest was piqued more by the Kanye song (and the black people,) in the opening credits. I'm neutral on the novel, but I love Baz Luhrmann's directing style, and I'm betting the soundtrack is going to be fantastic.

Leo is definitely one of my favorite actors, but I don't want to jump his bones like I did when I was younger. I guess I have started appreciating him more for his talent. I really want him to win an Oscar (or two or three,) he's already done several roles that were worthy.

    1. I love Leo in a fish tank! I've been waiting for him to win an Oscar for what feels like years! I am definitely less likely to jump his bones now than I was in the R&J days considering that he regularly wears old man pants, but he is still a beautiful man. I'm looking forward to seeing his interpretation of Gatsby!

  5. OHG, I'm a Depp fan too! My favorite movie is Finding Neverland. He is so handsome, lovely, charming, perfect. Just finding your blog...it's a beautiful design. Love pink and cupcakes too! Going to follow, so I can check back now and then. :-)

  6. My parents watched 21 Jump Street when I was little and I was 3-4 when I got my first taste of Officer Tom Hansen. I would sit in front of the TV just mesmerized by Johnny Depp.He was my first celebrity crush (soon followed by Peter Jennings). A viewing was never complete without my kissing the television screen while they were on.

I'm happy to know that even young me had great taste.

I think we both know where I stand on fish tank Leo.
