Friday Five (1)

First Friday Five of the New Year! Woot!

1. I didn't really do too much shopping over the holidays. My gifts for the princess manifested themselves differently (more on this later) and I didn't really buy things for other people or myself. When I hit up the after Christmas sales at Old Navy with my friend Jana last week, I wasn't expecting to find anything for myself and true to form, I bought a bunch of stuff for the princess. Just before heading for checkout, I managed to find a pair of khakis for $3. My frugal nature could not pass up this bargain and I snapped them up right away. Now I'm second guessing my purchase because unlike Indiana Jones, I don't know how to make khakis look good. I have a feeling that when I finally wear them, I'm going to end up looking like I should be working in tech support. Jury is still very much out on this one.

2. Normally during the holiday season I go to at least 3 or 4 movies but this year was a bit different. Since I was exhausted by my own emo over missing the princess, I didn't really do much except for wallow. Despite my sadness, I did manage to get out once during the holidays and see Young Adult.
I had really high expectations for the movie, mainly because it was written by Diablo Cody, who also wrote Juno which is one of my favorite movies ever, and because it stars Charlize Theron who is my ultimate girl crush*.
I was surprised at a lot of things about the movie. I think I initially thought it would be funny and slightly dark, but it ended up being more dark and slightly funny. I absolutely enjoyed it despite the fact that it wasn't what I was expecting, but I was thrown for a loop quite a few times.
Charlize plays a YA author who is unhappy, depressed, and hates her lot in life. She decides after getting a birth announcement her high school boyfriend and his wife that she needs to head to back to her hometown and save him from his humdrum suburban existence. Hijinks obviously ensue (well booze and appalling behavior anyway) since said ex-boyfriend is perfectly happy with his life.
As I said, this movie was very dark and more of a character study than a plot driven drama. I actually think that Diablo Cody started writing the Sweet Valley High film and ended up with Young Adult because Charlize's character Mavis, is totally a middle aged Jessica Wakefield. I definitely recommend it, but only if you're not in need of something warm and fuzzy...because it seriously is neither warm nor fuzzy.

3. Have you read 30 Things to Stop Doing to Yourself yet? You should. Right now in fact. If you're reading this then stop and click the link then come back when you're finished reading. I'll wait.

I know right? #1 and #6 OWN me.

4. Random thought...why do so many people hate Coldplay? I do not understand how you can hear an amazing song like Fix You and still say you hate them or at least not give them another chance. Maybe I've been brainwashed by the pop culture media but I love them and often use their songs on my writing playlist. To each their own I guess.

5. The Fault in Our Stars will be here on TUESDAY! That's 4 days away!!! Plus 20 more days until I fangirl the freak out get to see John Green!!!! Still no clue on what to wear but I am doing quite a few things to prepare for the event...which I'll be happy to share very very soon.

Happy Weekend Everyone!

*Seriously...if I ever discovered I was a lesbian, it would be for Charlize.

I happen to love Coldplay. I haven't listened to their most recent CD much but the one before it is fantastic. Especially the song Fix You.
